Telling time
Second graders learn to tell time to the quarter hour: 8:30 is half past eight, 9:15 is quarter past nine and 5:45 is quarter to six. They switch between words and digital times, including 24-hour times like 14:15.
How to solve this
- The clock has two hands: the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes.
- Each number on the clock face stands for 5 minutes — count by fives for the minute hand position.
- Check: state the time in words ("half past three", "quarter to five") and confirm it matches the hands.
