Grade 2 Math

Elapsed time

Elapsed time problems ask what time it will be, what time it was, or how long something took. Children count on or back in minutes and hours: 10:00 minus 15 minutes is 09:45.

How to solve this

  • When calculating with time, work in minutes and hours separately — be careful at the 60-minute boundary.
  • To find elapsed time, count on from the start time to the end time in steps of hours, then minutes.
  • Check: start time + duration should equal the end time; count forward on a clock if unsure.

Examples

09:20 + 30 min

09:50

10:00 - 15 min

09:45
