Calculation rules
Practise identifying operations, evaluating expressions, and comparing two expressions without rushing left to right.
How to solve this
- In 4 + 6 × 3, multiplication comes first: 6 × 3 = 18, then 4 + 18 = 22.
- Operation words matter: sum points to addition, difference to subtraction, product to multiplication, quotient to division.
- When comparing expressions, calculate each side or transform one side carefully; do not compare only the visible numbers.
Examples
4 + 6 × 3
22
Which operation? 48 ÷ 6 = 8
division
5 × 8 + 10 __ 5 × (8 + 10)
