Half, quarter, three quarters
A quarter is half of a half, so a quarter of 12 is 3 (12 → 6 → 3), and three quarters are three of those parts: 9. Second graders practice these simple fractions of numbers as a first step toward fractions.
How to solve this
- One half means 1 out of 2 equal parts; one quarter means 1 out of 4 equal parts.
- To find a quarter of a number, halve it and then halve again: a quarter of 20 is 20 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 = 5.
- Check: four quarters make a whole, so 4 × (quarter) should equal the original number.
