Grade 4 Math

Numbers over 1,000,000

This topic keeps big numbers concrete: children read them in groups, compare the million and thousand parts, and estimate before calculating.

How to solve this

  • Do not read 2,500,000 digit by digit. Read it as 2 million and 500 thousand; the groups give the number its meaning.
  • When two numbers both have millions, compare the million group first, then the thousand group, then the last three digits.
  • For estimates, round to a useful place: 9,840,000 is close to 10,000,000, which is enough for a quick size check.

Examples

2,500,000 __ 2,050,000

>

3,200,000 + 400,000

3,600,000

9,840,000 rounded to the nearest million

10,000,000
