Subtraction with borrow to 1000 helps children practise subtracting three-digit numbers when borrowing across digits is needed — for example 604 − 278 = 326. Read the short guide and look through the examples before choosing online practice or a printable worksheet.

How to solve this

  • Subtraction with borrowing to 1000 may require two separate borrows — from tens to ones, and from hundreds to tens.
  • Each borrow: reduce the lending column by 1, add 10 to the column that needed more.
  • Check by adding: answer + subtracted number must exactly equal the starting number.
