Grade 2 Math

Number chains (mixed)

In a mixed number chain the child adds and subtracts in order, carrying each result into the next step: 36 + 8 = 44, then 44 − 4 = 40. Longer chains train mental math and concentration within 100.

How to solve this

  • A mixed calculation chain uses both addition and subtraction — keep track of the running total at each step.
  • Work from left to right and jot down each intermediate result; never skip ahead.
  • Check by working right to left using inverse operations — you must arrive back at the starting number.

Examples

40 + 20 - 10 = ?

50

36 + 8 - 4 = ?

40
