Division with remainder
Division with remainder helps children practise dividing so that the dividend does not split evenly, and writing both the quotient and the remainder. Read the short guide and look through the examples before choosing online practice or a printable worksheet.
How to solve this
- When a number does not divide evenly, the remainder is what is left over: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2.
- Find the largest multiple of the divisor that fits without exceeding the dividend, then subtract to get the remainder.
- Check: (quotient × divisor) + remainder must equal the dividend exactly.
Examples
17 ÷ 5 = ?
3 R 2
23 ÷ 4 = ?
5 R 3
