What is multiplication?

Multiplication tells how many objects there are in equal groups. If there are 3 bags with 4 apples in each bag, the total is 3 x 4 = 12. Children can see multiplication as groups, rows, arrays, or jumps on a number line.

Multiplication as repeated addition

Repeated addition is often the first bridge into multiplication. The fact 5 x 4 can be read as 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4, or five equal groups of four. Once the child sees the pattern, the multiplication fact becomes a shorter way to write the same total.

2 x 6 means 6 + 6.
3 x 5 means 5 + 5 + 5.
4 x 10 means 10 + 10 + 10 + 10.
