Calculation snakes (mixed)

Calculation snakes (mixed) helps children practise following a step-by-step chain of mixed additions and subtractions up to 100 — for example 36 + 8 − 4. Read the short guide and look through the examples before choosing online practice or a printable worksheet.

How to solve this

  • A mixed calculation chain uses both addition and subtraction — keep track of the running total at each step.
  • Work from left to right and jot down each intermediate result; never skip ahead.
  • Check by working right to left using inverse operations — you must arrive back at the starting number.

Examples

40 + 20 - 10 = ?

36 + 8 - 4 = ?
